What Are The Causes of Hair Loss?

January 15th, 2008

The causes of hair loss (alopecia), in both men and women, can be many and varied. These include environmental factors like sunlight and harsh weather, chemicals and illness or injury to the scalp.

The causes of hair loss can be changes in hormone levels, aging, stress, pregnancy or breastfeeding. The main hormone responsible for alopecia is testosterone and this is why men tend to be more prone to shiny pate syndrome than women. It can actually affect men in their twenties which can of course be very stressful and embarrassing to say the least. Men with receding hairlines are always looking for new and effective hair regrowth formulas, often with minimal results, and they just keep looking untill they discover something that works.

Your hormone levels are in your genes, so your chances of suffering from early hair-loss will be greatly increased if you have parents or grandparents who were also affected, especially if they are on your mothers side of your family. However even with a genetic link, the rate of hair loss as well as age of onset, can be difficult to predict and can vary significantly between individuals.

Some other causes of hair loss to consider are excessive shampooing and blow-drying or overusing chemical colorants or perming solutions. Especially over a period of time, it can result in hair loss and slowed growth, so for those who have a high probability of hereditary hair loss care should be taken to negate the likelyhood that it isn’t accellerated by the misuse of hair products.
