Do Teenagers Get Stretch Marks As They Grow?

August 1st, 2007

This has been a very popular question from our younger
readers. As you can imagine, they are very concerned about the appearance of
stretch marks on their developing bodies. But as teenagers breach puberty and enter the teen years, their bodies develop tremendously fast. These spurts do not allow their skin’s surface to adjust properly to the rapid changes. With these growth spurts, their skin is put to the maximum
test.

So, do teenagers get stretch marks? Absolutely!

Can they prevent stretch marks with a regular skin care program? Evidence suggests that if they take a proactive approach, they can certainly reduce the likelihood of developing unsightly stretch marks.

The beauty of youth though is that a teens’ skin will be more
elastic and flexible than adults. This said, they can still experience
stretch marks because of their periods of rapid body growth. As they
enter the teen years, their bodies undergo dramatic changes as their
body shape moves toward that of a mature adult.

Females tend to be at higher risk as their hips, buttocks
and thighs rapidly take on more weight. Their breasts are also at risk
of developing stretch marks because of the same rapid growth. Even
though their skin is much more resilient than an adults, the
speed in which their skin is expected to adjust to this new growth
can be overwhelming. And as you can guess, the result can be skin damage in
the form of stretch marks.
